DANIEL MORENO & SPEAK IN TONES "SUBARO"

Every Thursday night at 56 Walker St. in the Tribeca section of Manhattan took place an informal jam session with the BADDDEST musicians in the city, it went by the name of 'Speak IN Tones' and was one of those mystical mysterious weekly occurrences that if you knew about you didn't tell anyone for fear of it being spoiled. The backbone and conductor, one could say the rhythm of them was Daniel Moreno. The name may seem familiar as he is the multi-percussionist who is ever-present on Joe Claussell's music, if it does not ring a bell, the sound most definitely will, for there exists no one on this side of China for who can make a gong talk the way Daniel does. Daniel was joined by them all every week, yet you never knew who was going to be there, from the masters taught by Miles Davis to his young protégé Dende to the Russian madman on sax Mike Ellis, it was a lesson in humility and skill. The sound and feeling cannot be expressed in words, for they exist only in a color, it is the color of warmth - that red-orange glow that is all fuzzy when magick is in the air. But, like all that is progressive, the attempt must be made for it to be silenced --- so it came to end over 2 years ago. Fear not though, for this story does not have an unhappy ending ---- magick cannot be silenced, redirected maybe, but silenced never. So, 1 year ago, Daniel and his fellow madmen of music boarded a plane and went to Brasil and for one week straight, ate, drank and played together as if it was the early hours of a Thursday night in NYC.
