Before house music was relegated to the oversimplified hall of cultural artifacts classified “black music,” various tendencies vied for the claim to the throne of the globe's fastest growing musical phenomenon. The result was a veritable clusterfuck of influences, part of what attracted so many followers to a movement that claimed such a vast ancestry.
In New York City, Puerto Rican and Dominican culture staked a huge claim, helping not only to contribute to the overall house aesthetic but additionally birthing a specific tendency that shouted its latino roots with a generous dose of pride and flair. A few names in particular come up: Armand Van Helden, Erick Morillo, Strictly Rhythm records---leaders of the party-rocking latin house sound that went for the gold in popular appeal and cathy incontestability.
