Dope new Theo Parrish!!! We know it was on last weeks email as a recommended release, but we felt it was necessary to stress just how dope this new release is. Fine tuning & rigorously developing his style since his debut in the early 1990’s, Theo Parrish has continued to develop his sound without leaving listeners too comfortable---pushing boundaries and constantly reinventing his approach. Recently he’s turned to more vocal, song oriented music (while still nodding frequently to his track-obsessed alter-ego), and the result is his latest effort, the spellbinding “Goin’ Through Changes.” Finally, a vocal that takes a brave step forward while retaining the necessary catchiness to make it an indisputable hit. Ladies and gentlemen, this is the future of soulful house music. “Goin’ Through Changes” doesn’t sound immediately obvious at first; it still harbors the defensive creative ingenuity of Parrish’s totally funky off-kilter production style, and yet its creation is so firmly rooted in the basic & sincere expressiveness of Parrish & 19-year-old newcomer Danny Banks that it’s appeal is, essentially, universal. An undeniable vocal landmark of the last number of years. Meanwhile “Spacestation” balances the 12” out with a solid track workout, dark, determined & mathematically soulful: a more ominous take on experimental electronic as it gives a clear nod to the more stark & rigid sound of Detroit techno, and yet approachable and popular in it’s own right. There are still a few records that give us the clear sensation that dance music is still, despite all the self=negation & uncertainty, taking a few steps forward each year….Sound Signature’s 35th release is definitely one of them. Take notice.
