Yes, it’s finally here, the follow-up to his highly-praised debut 12” on FXHE, Luke Hess his back with this equally well-deserving 4-track effort aptly titled “Dubout EP #2.” Hess & FXHE head Omar S. are not inclined to go changing a good thing on us, and wise they are, as this newest 12” from the new geniuses of Detroit injects some needed inspiration into the 2008 milieu. “Dubout EP #2” delivers more druggy, ethereal, dubbed-out tracks of simple brilliance---from the floating, sparsely dispersed chords and mature breakbeat of “Refined by Fire” to the aggressively disturbed yet reserved minimalism of “Shalom Dub” & “Renewal Part 2” (mixed by Omar S. himself), Mr. Hess’ second installment of “Dubout” continues to boil down the basic elements of house & techno in search of new, highly-concentrated formulas of potent efficacy, re-conceptualizing the minimal aesthetic in negotiating the medium between stubborn repetition & over-extended instrumentation. “Dubout EP 2” refuses to take the easy route by making dub tracks that appeal to musical listeners, balking at the seduction of disinterested laziness in proving his versatility as a producer and composer of minimal dance music.
